The Great Questions Symposium: Student Proposal Form
 
 
Welcome! The Great Questions Symposium will take place in person on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 5.40 pm to 8.10 pm and is open to students from all MDC campuses. Student proposals that have been accepted will be paired with a faculty mentor to assist with reading selections from https://www.tgqf.org/the-great-questions/. At least one reading must be selected from the link. The second selection can be chosen by the student and might be an artwork, performance, or a classical or contemporary literary text not listed on The Great Questions site. If any students wish to select to works from The Great Questions site, they can. Addot 

Deliverables:
  • A poster (template provided) to include an abstract with the thesis statement, the chosen Great Question,  works cited
  • 5-page paper with works cited
  • Symposium rehearsal
  • Presentation at The Great Questions Symposium on April 17, 2025, at 5.40-8.10 pm*
*(consisting of oral presentations. Performance, poetry, and/or art is welcome but an oral explanation is required)

Award: If 
your proposal is accepted and you complete the project with a presentation at the symposium, you will be awarded a $50 honorarium* and The Great Questions Scholar certificate
* (subject to your eligibility to receive funds via the Financial Aid Office).
 
 
Student work should satisfy some of these criteria:
 
  • Read two texts (one “text” might be art or performing arts) with the selected Great Question in mind
  •  Emphasis should be made on how the selected works answer the question, emphasizing both shared and different perspectives.
  • Students should apply the relevance of the question and texts to the 21st century. (How are the texts and questions still relevant?)
  • Effectively communicates the importance of the work
  • Presents an original work, scholarly or creative (PowerPoint presentation of a paper, art, spoken word, performance)
